The Robert E. Lee Monument was one of Richmond Virginia’s grandest spectacles. Sculpted by French artist Jean Antonin Mercie, the monument was officially unveiled on May 29, 1890 with tens of thousands of surviving Confederate veterans and civilians in attendance–a parade that stretch for four miles. For 131 years, visitors from all around the world would visit Richmond’s monument avenue to view this beautiful 60-foot work of art.
The Lee monument remained a key attraction for decades up until its unlawful removal on September 8, 2021. Like many parts of our cultural history, the Lee monument fell prey to the scourge of political correctness.
