Back:

Pvt. Dewitt Smith Jobe’s best friend Sam Davis has been hung as a spy yet he continued in his mission as a scout. Realizing that he was surrounded between Triune and Nolensville, Tennessee and about to be captured, Pvt. Jobe began eating the valuable documents in his possession. Infuriated by his actions, his captors, members of the 115th Ohio Inf., bound and beat him, demanding to know their contents. Refusing their demands he was slowly strangled with a leather strap around his neck. When the Yankees realized he would not talk, they tortured him…beating out his teeth with rifle butts, gouging out his eyes from their sockets and finally cutting out his tongue. They they dragged his mutilated body behind a horse until he died.
