Back:
On April 17, 1861 Doctor Hunter Holmes McGuire enlisted as a private in Company F, 2nd Virginia Infantry Regiment. He did not remain a private for long. He was sent to Richmond to apply for a Commission with the Medical Department of the War Department. In May 1861, he was directed to report to General Thomas Jackson as Medical Director of the Army of the Shenandoah. Dr. McGuire was both tireless and selfless and he and Jackson soon became fast friends. He attended Jackson at Chancellorsville and was with him when he died. After the War Dr. McGuire worked to ease the suffering of his ravaged Commonwealth. Later he said, “The noblest heritage I shall hand down to my children is the fact that Stonewall Jackson condescended to hold me as his friend.”
