Moses Ezekiel was born of Hebrew parents in Richmond, Virginia and received a state scholarship to attend the Virginia Military Institute. He entered as the first Jewish cadet on September 17, 1862 and after the invasion of Virginia participated in the battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. He graduated with the class of 1866, and was encouraged by Robert E. Lee to pursue a career in art. He subsequently studied in Europe and became the first American to win the Prix de Rome. His accomplishment and fame resulted in being knighted by three European monarch. His works are magnificent but mostly forgotten. He died in Rome and desired burial in Virginia. His Tombstone Reads: Moses J. Ezekiel, Sergeant of Company C, Battalion of Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute.
