The 10th Virginia was originally organized as State Militia and formally reorganized and mustered into Confederate service July 1, 1861. Comprising 13 companies of 85-100 men each from Rockingham (8), Shenandoah (3), Page (1) and Madison (1) Counties and with 11 companies serving with the unit at any given time. On every field in which they were engaged they took or held their objective and acquitted themselves with honor. 1475 men mustered through the 10th and at the surrender at Appomattox 46 received paroles.
