The flag of the Army of Trans-Mississippi had reversed coloration which was not uncommon during the War Between the States, especially in the Western theater. The Trans-Mississippi department was composed of all Louisiana west of the Mississippi River, the entire States of Arkansas, Missouri and Texas, the Indian nations in what is now Oklahoma, and the Confederate Territory of Arizona which included the Southern portions of modern Arizona and New Mexico.

This particular flag is often referred to as the Taylor Battle flag, named for General Richard Taylor, whose army used it in Western Louisiana from 1864 until the end of the War.
