The Third National Confederate Flag, also known as the “Blood-stained Banner.”
On March 4, 1865, the design of the Confederate national flag was altered from the 2nd National flag (the Stainless Banner) because its white field could be mistaken for a flag of truce or surrender. The new pattern, today called the third national flag, featured a vertical red bar added to the outer edge.
