John Hanson "Hanse" McNeill served as a captain in the Confederate Army. He was best known for leading McNeill's Rangers, an independent irregular Confederate military company. McNeill's Rangers were known for their paramilitary warfare tactics, conducting raids and disrupting Union supply lines in the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas. McNeill himself was a daring and resourceful leader, earning a reputation for his bold and effective strategies. McNeill's Last Charge" by J. W. Duffey is an account of the daring exploits of Confederate partisan John H. McNeill. The book, originally published in 1912, provides a detailed narrative of McNeill's actions, particularly focusing on the skirmish at Mount Jackson, Virginia. It also includes a sketch of the capture of two famous Union generals by the Rangers. While McNeill's actions did not change the overall outcome of the war, they certainly created challenges for the Union forces and showcased the effectiveness of guerrilla tactics.
