Leonidas Polk graduated the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, July 4, 1827. Soon after he resigned his Commission to pursue a calling into the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal Church. His devotion and energy caused him to be named Missionary Bishop to the South West then Bishop of Louisiana. Realizing that the South would not be permitted to secede peacefully he offered his services to President Davis. Lt. Gen. Polk was killed on the Kenesaw Line.
