Leonidas Polk was one of the most illustrious Southern heroes to fall in service to his beloved country, the Confederate States of America. Born of patriotic pedigree, his father was a Revolutionary War hero and his grandfather was a general officer in the Continental Army and a friend of George Washington, he rose to the rank of Lt. General before being killed in action during the Atlanta campaign. He was also a cousin to James K. Polk, eleventh president of the United States and had the distinction of being the first cadet known to have been converted to Christianity while attending West Point. His pre-war achievement were many and varied, including his missionary work in the deep South where he was largely responsible for founding The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
