Jubal Anderson Early was descended from an Irish father and Scots mother in Franklin County Virginia and accustomed to hard work, stewardship and that deep sense of duty required of responsibility. His time at West Point, the Seminole War and Mexican War developed his martial abilities. As a strong “Union Man” he opposed secession yet voted for secession once the 16th President called for 75,000 troops to invade the South. He was commissioned Colonel in the Virginia Militia, and advanced through the ranks, being involved in most campaigned in the defense Virginia. His greatest challenge came after the looting, burning and rape of the Shenandoah Valley when he was called to defend a desolate area against a force of two and a half time his strength. He acquitted himself with honor being always loyal to his commander.
