Back:
John Bell Hood was one of the South's most daring and aggressive commanders. The Kentuckian graduated from West Point and proved his mettle in the Mexican-American War. He made his home in Texas and when Northern hostilities began he led the famed "Texas Brigade"a unit
renowned for its fierce fighting and loyalty. Hood's Texans earned lasting fame at Gaines' Mill and Gettysburg where their courage and discipline became legendary. Despite terrible wounds and heavy losses at Gettysburg and Chickamauga, Hood refused to waiver as leader of his men. Later as commander of the Army of Tennessee at Franklin, he showed relentless resolve against overwhelming Union forces. His steadfast leadership and devotion to the Southern cause made him a symbol of valor and sacrifice of both Texas and the Confederacy.
