This county began as a part of Augusta County, Virginia in 1745, and a portion of it was a part of Rockingham County, Virginia, for 10 years. In 1787, it became a seperate county, being hamed in honor of Edmund Pendleton, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson. Included in the book are early court records, Indian raids, camps, and customs, early forts, the Militia, slavery, and the effects of the Civil War in the county. A large section is devoted to history and genealogy of the early settlers of the area.
