David Humphreys was shot three times at short range, and was carried across the Rappahannock River for dead, when the water splashing in his face revived him. About the author: Virginian David Humphreys was born May 2, 1832. He served under the command of both Turner Ashby and Stonewall Jackson. After the war, he was a prominent citizen of Norfolk and resided there until his death July 5, 1905.
