HELL IN THE CELL: THE SURVIVAL STORY OF PVT. MATTHEW MARSHALL AND HIS FATHER PVT. RICHARD MARSHALL OF THE 52ND NC INFANTRY CO. D (MCCULOCH'S AVENGERS). THEY WERE HELD CAPTIVE HERE AS PRISONS OF WAR FROM THE YEARS OF 1864 TO 1865 AT POINT LOOKOUT, MARYLAND


"HELL IN THE CELL" is based on the wartime experiences of my 3rd great grandfather Pvt. Matthew Cmore Marshall and his father Pvt. Richard Marshall, who was both captured as a prisoner of war and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. Pvt. Richard Marshall was captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania County CourtHouse, in Virginia, on May 20th,1864, Pvt. Richard Marshall was wounded and captured. He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland as a Prisoner of War from June 11th,1864 -June 11th,1865. Private Matthew Cmore Marshall was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia and was captured on July 2nd,1864. He was also sent to Point Lookout, Maryland as a prisoner of war. From there, he was reunited with his father Pvt. Richard Marshall. They took the Oath in 1865 to return home to North Carolina. A few years later, in 1870, the Marshall's moved to Southwest Virginia in Russell County, Virginia. At the age of 81 in 1898, Richard Marshall died, and his son Matthew Marshall died at the age of 88 in 1930 in Russell County, Virginia.
