This book is based on the speech by John Sergeant Wise, a veteran of the Battle of New Market, Virginia, where he fought as a VMI cadet. In his address at VMI May 13, 1882, Wise describes the battle in first person--which is subjective, poignant, and even humorous in part. By reading the personal narrative, on can indeed feel oneself on the field of combat as an untried soldier determined to win the day. The address has footnotes, annotations, and illustrations. Brief biographies of the combatants are given along with the revelation of the Union immigrant general, Franz Sigel's involvement in the failed Radical Socialist Revolutions of 1848 in his native Germany. A roll of participating VMI cadets is listed, in addition to what happened to them after the War Between the States.
