The Appeal to Heaven Flag, also known as “The Tree Flag,” was flown during America’s First War for Independence. The flag features a pine tree, usually with the motto “An Appeal to Heaven,” and was originally used by a squadron of six ship cruisers (Washington’s Cruisers) commissioned under George Washington’s authority in 1775. It was designed by Washington’s secretary, Colonel Joseph Reed. The pine tree is a common early symbol of New England representing colonial resistance and support of independence from England.
