In anticipation of the secession of Alabama, some ladies of Montgomery painted a beautiful flag for presentation to the State. The Alabama Convention approved the flag and, upon the adoption of the Ordinance of Secession, the new Alabama flag was raised over the capitol of the Independent Republic.
Alabama's banner was unique among Southern State flags in being two-sided; that is, the front and back had different designs. The central device on the front of the blue flag was the goddess of Liberty dressed in red with a sword in her right hand a Bonnie Blue flag in her left. The back features a cotton plant guarded by a rattlesnake with the Latin motto "Noli Me Tangrere," meaning "Don't Touch Me."
The flag was also used by the 2nd Alabama Cavalry .
