A Short History of Page County gives the reader a extensive amount of information on Page County, Virginia over its long existence. One of Western Virginia's best county histories, Mr. Strickler, a well-known attorney, did extensive research on what is believed to be the first settlement of the Shenandoah Valley at Massanutten in 1726. A wealth of information on old homes, fort houses, court records, the Civil War, towns and villages, the Shenandoah National Park, post offices, churches, and Indian mounds. Around 1772 the territory was organized and called Dunmore County, after John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, Governor-in-chief, 1771-1776. Sometime after the Revolution it was renamed after John Page, a member of the first U.S. Congress and Governor of Virginia.
