The stars are representative of the states which seceded from the union: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. The flag may also be seen with 7 Stars and 11 stars.
