Proceeds From the Sale of This Book Go to the Preservation of Civil War Battlefields.

In April of 1861 Sam Buck was among the men who formed a volunteer unit called the Fort Loudoun Guards in Winchester, Virginia. The company was designated Company H of the 13th Virginia Infantry when the Regiment was formed on May 9, 1869. Company H later earned the nickname: “Winchester Boomerangs.”

Samuel Dawson Buck was born on March 2, 1841 near Front Royal, Virginia in an area called Buckton. Prior to the War he was a clerk in a dry goods store. He enlisted April 19, 1861 and was appointed the rank of Sargent, rose to Lieutenant in November of 1862 and Captain in May of 1863. After the Battle of Cedar Creek he briefly commanded the Regiment.

By March 1865 there were only four men in his company; he resigned to join the cavalry, but the War ended before he could reach his new company. Captain Buck was a man of courage and humility and his story is poignant, informative, easy to read and an authentic first-hand account of the events in which he participated, and there were many. He participated in 35 engagements and was struck with rounds 4 times.

Captain Buck never intended his memoirs to be published as they were written for the benefit of his family and friends. After his death, at the earnest solicitation of his friends, his widow, Alice Parkins Buck published it as a memorial to him and the cause he held so dear.
