This anthology of ten historical and biographical essays focuses on women's roles during the Civil War. Using archival research and, often, excerpts from real women's own letters and diaries, these essays reveal true stories of heroism. Each chapter focuses on a different woman and the part she played in the conflict, from Charlotte S. Branch, whose three sons went off to fight; to Loretta Janeta Velazquez, who was a soldier herself; to Ella K. Newsom Trader, who served as a nurse.
