Frank Stringfellow, a Virginian was teaching at a school in Mississippi, but returned to Virginia when war became immanent. He tried to enlist in 4 seperate companies but was rejected because of his small stature. He then captured 3 sentries and brought them to the commanders tent. he was sworn into Confederate service May 28, 1861. This began his incredible career as a scout for General Lee and General Stuart.

Stringfellow escaped capture as least six times with quick thinking and clever disguises. In March of 1865 he was sent by President Davis to Washington. He disguised himself as a dental student and gathered intelligence. While attempting to leave Washington he was captured but again managed an escape. A $10,000 reward was offered for his capture and when the war ended he fled to Canada. He returned to Virginia in 1867 and resided at “Wakefield” in Fairfax County. He was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1876 and served as Rector of Woodberry Forrest School in Orange, Virginia and as an Army chaplain in the Spanish American War (1898). Frank Stringfellow died on June 8, 1913 at the age of 73, and is buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria, VA next to his wife Emma.
