This is volume 1 of the beautiful 2 volume set of Alexander Stephen's A Constitutional View of the War Between the States is no longer in print. This is a hardback copy with premium binding, it's made to last. As they say, this source is "from the horses mouth"--an account from someone who made major political decisions within the Confederate government. Stephens was brilliant, as is clearly shown within his book and he extensively explains why the South fought, while defaming the typical Yankee narratives. A Georgian, Alexander Hamilton Stephens [1812-1883] was Vice President of the Confederate States of America. He was a U.S. congressman from Georgia before the war and its governor from 1882 until his death in 1883. A Constitutional View is a sophisticated and well-argued defense of the doctrine of state sovereignty and the right of states to secede. The book "was a sensation in its day, evoking attacks by Northern and Southern champions of causes upon which it impinged."
