The “Stars and Bars,” also known as the First National Confederate Flag, was adopted by the Confederate Provisional Congress on March 4, 1861. The seven stars in the canton represent the first seven seceded Southern states; South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Soon, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee would follow (making it 11 stars). Then finally, Missouri and Kentucky (13 stars).
