“Copperhead” refers to the particular group of Northerners who supported the Southern Confederacy or opposed the Lincoln Administration during the War Between the States. These followers would often wear a copper penny, similar to the one here, to express their convictions. Thousands of “Copperheads” were illegally imprisoned for speaking out against the Lincoln Administration. Could this be why Lincoln’s image is now on that coin?
